Neither Windows nor OS X are very good at 'parking' the active (most time consuming) application thread on a single CPU (avoiding the "bouncing around" problem). The OS'es must be compared in a straight forward way, IMO, where you take into account only the raw results of the related test and not the ratios between those test on the individual OSes. The problem, in this case, is when the OS is not keeping the running (single-threaded) application on the same CPU (core) and instead is bouncing 'it' around to different CPUs - this will produce an artificially low score, which when compared to the muti-threaded version of the same program will result in artificially high ratio. Using the ratio between multi-threaded and single-threaded execution within the same OS can be misleading since it is possible for the OS to have problem(s) handling a single-threaded application when multiple CPUs(cores) are present. The simplest and probably best way to compare OS'es, given the test at hand, is to juxtaposition their respective (raw) scores when running in single-threaded and multi-threaded mode - preferably running on the exact same hardware. This is not a good measure for performance, however. Seems like XP gets more of a speedup on multiprocessor machines than does OS X.
